Welcome to the Meg Giry section of SirenSong. I chose
Meg Giry as the first in a series of character sketches because she represents
many things. Meg is Christine before Erik. She is innocent, giddy and gossipy,
yet she has inner strength that is to be admired.
Meg truly is an indespensible part of
The Phantom of the Opera
for many reasons. She represents the promise of youth, the freshness of innocence.
The best tragedies are those that are the most realistic and the absence of
the opera populaire would make the novel witless and dry. Meg Giry adds
grace and freshness to an otherwise dark tale.
